Marilyn Volkman, 2011“Is Information Real or Can it be Simulated?”, “What is the Role of Knowledge in Society and is it Free?”, “What is Consensus and is it Possible to Reach It?” (2010), Still Films 1, 2, and 3 (2011) As
a part of the larger project ANSWERS, the videos “Is Information Real
or Can it be Simulated?”, “What is the Role of Knowledge in Society and
is it Free?”, and “What is Consensus and is it Possible to Reach It?”
ask ethereal, existential questions about seemingly concrete things
related to the philosophy of professional life. In this grouping NATO
soldiers working within the Communication and Information Systems
Services Agency are asked to define the terminology of their work in
broad philosophical terms.
In each case, the respondent has the option to affirm, question or redefine the language that pervades their daily work within the institution. Still Films (1, 2 and 3) function as the absolute antipode to the informational video-archive of ANSWERS. In its lyrical arrangement of women presenting themselves to the camera, Still Films embodies desire and control as a self-sustaining cinematic object. Where ANSWERS uses its medium to test the relationship between identity, language and the larger social, economic and political world, Still Films abandons all attempts at excavation and instead gives in to the immediate gratification of the body as it is united by image and sound. ![]() |
